Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death in the United States[1]. In 2001, cardiovascular diseases accounted for 38.5 percent of all deaths in the United States, or approximately 1 death every 34 seconds[1].  For 2004, the cost of cardiovascular diseases and strokes in the United States (including direct & indirect expenses)is estimated at $368.4 Billion[1]

"Cardiac Markers" typically are proteins that are released into the bloodstream after a cardiac event.  These proteins are referred to as “cardiac markers”, because they “mark” the presence or absence of a cardiac event.  Cardiac markers with acceptable performance characteristics are utilized in commercially available diagnostic tests.

Troponin-I and Troponin-T are KEY cardiac markers and are the preferred markers for the diagnosis of myocardial injury[2].  The "Troponins" are contractile proteins found in cardiac muscle.  The Troponin complex is comprised of the following three subunits:

  • Troponin-I (the inhibitory component)
  • Troponin-T (the tropomyosin component)
  • Troponin-C (the calicium binding component)

The Troponin-I and Troponin-T cardiac markers have been recognized internationally by cardiovascular organizations for use in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarctions (AMI). Within hours after the onset of chest pain and heart damage, Troponin levels rise rapidly and remain elevated for several days.  Numerous tests for diagnosing acute myocardial infarctions, using Troponin-I or Troponin-T, have been commercialized.  For definitive diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and myocardial cell damage, Cardiac Troponin-I and Troponin-T are currently the best cardiac markers[3].

Other Cardiac Domain Names

Other cardiac related domain names now available include:

BNP-Test.com

REQUEST INFO

  • BNP (Brain Natriuretic Peptide) is a cardiac hormone that is also an emerging cardiac marker.  BNP levels are increased in individuals with chronic heart failure.  BNP tests are commercially available.

CRP-Assay.com

REQUEST INFO

  • CRP (C-Reactive Protein) is a protein that is produced in the liver that becomes elevated in inflammatory conditions.  CRP levels are typically elevated for those at risk for future cadiac events[4].

HCY-Test.com

REQUEST INFO

  • HCY (Homocysteine) is an amino acid involved in the synthetic pathway from methionine to cysteine[4].  Elevated levels of HCY are recognized as an increased risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD)[4].
  • Diagnostic tests for Troponin-I, Troponin-T, BNP, CRP and HCY are all commercially available.
